  7. WHAT IS THIS?

  9. This is the second set of my NewIcon images for your Workbench.
  10. These all use the standard NewIcon palette, so they won't
  11. allocate any extra pens from your workbench if you are already using
  12. Newicons.

  15. WHAT'S IN IT?
  16.  
  17. Included are images not found in the original NewIcons archive,
  18. NewIconsXtra set, or AesIcons1.  Many are totally original, some are adapted
  19. from parts of Roger McVey's work, and a few others are adapted from
  20. images done by other aspiring isoicon artists, such as Dave Wiles' nice
  21. work.   Credit is due to these guys.  This archive includes icons for
  22. many games, network/email stuff, utilities, commodities, etc.

  24. Included in the "envarcsys" drawer of this archive are some new deficons,
  25. including separate default picture icons for IFF, JPEG, and GIF files.
  26. If you are running deficons, the deficons program will identify which
  27. type of picture file it is, and show the appropriate icon.  Since
  28. default JPG and GIF files were not included in the original NewIcons
  29. package (although supported), I decided to make these ones.  The icons
  30. in the "envarcsys" drawer are the only ones in this archive you can
  31. copy straight across into your ENVARC:sys drawer.  Don't forget to add
  32. your favorite pic viewer to the default tool if you want it to show up
  33. in the "Execute command" requester when you click on an iconless picture.
  34. The remainder of the icons in this archive should NOT be copied straight
  35. over to your other files.  Read below on how to install them.

  37. A lot of people are having trouble placing their def_RAMDisk to show up
  38. in the right place on thier workbench.  Here's the trick.  Open your
  39. ENVARC:sys drawer (that is, Prefs/Env-archive/sys) and drag the def_RAMDisk
  40. icon directly onto the workbench where you want it to show up.  Then snapshot
  41. it by selecting the icon and hitting RightAmiga-S.  Then put the icon away
  42. by selecting the "Put Away" Workbench menu item.  There!

  44. HEY SOFTWARE AUTHORS!
  45.  
  46. For you software authors out there, how bout putting some NewIcon images
  47. in with the program?  For those not using NewIcons, they don't see them
  48. anyway, and it saves me the trouble of having to deal with deleting those
  49. peach and purple MWB icons and me having to make new images for your software.
  50. You can easily make them from DPaint IFF brushes.

  52. Regardless of whether you prefer MWB or NewIcon images, it's important to
  53. remember that the NewIcons system works with either type of image, and gives
  54. you the benefit of not having to worry about what your palette is set to
  55. in preferences.  The images will auto-remap to the appropriate color.
  56. Personally, I prefer the NewIcons style, but you can use NewIcons to adapt
  57. your icons to any style you like.  Kudos to Nicola for making such a fine
  58. system, and to Roger for his excellent artwork.  It's been fun working
  59. with you guys.

  62. HOW DO I INSTALL THESE TINY LITTLE SQUARES?
  63.  
  64. If you plan to use these images, you need the NewIcons Package.  It's
  65. available on Aminet (pub/aminet/util/wb/NewIcons.lha).  If you are not
  66. running NewIcons, you will only see little squares for the icons, and
  67. this package will be of no use for you.  To install these images, use
  68. the "copynewicon" utility to transfer the images over to the appropriate
  69. icon.  DON'T use the "creatdefaulticon" utility.  That's for creating
  70. NewIcon images for files that don't have .info files attached to them.
  71. Copynewicon is safe to use on your existing icons, because it won't mess
  72. with your default tool or your tooltypes.  Also, DON'T just copy the .info
  73. file over to your existing programs, because you won't keep your default
  74. tool or tooltypes that way either.  Like the NewIcons documentation says,
  75. think of this collection as a catalog of "images" rather than icons, from
  76. which you copy the image over to your other programs, rather than replacing
  77. the whole icon itself.  (The exception in this archive are the icons in
  78. the "envarcsys" drawer, which CAN be copied directly to your ENVARC:sys
  79. drawer).

  81. This set is freely distributable, and the individual icons may be used or
  82. modified as you please.  If you pass on the package to others, please keep
  83. the archive intact with its documentation.
